MONTGOMERY, Ala. —
Monday marked the end of the 2012 season for the Ashford University men's soccer team.
The 14th-seeded Saints, in the midst of their second NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship appearance in school history, were defeated by third-seeded Concordia University (Calif.), 4-0, at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex in Montgomery.
Ashford was outshot in the match 17-5 but won the battle of the corner kicks by a 6-1 margin.
Both teams felt each other out during the first ten minutes of the clash and while Ashford had opportunities early, both chances were whistled for offsides. Concordia lit the scoreboard for the first time in the 13th minute of play before opening a 2-0 advantage with a 38th minute score.
Following the halftime break, the Eagles posted two more scores and turned away Ashford's lone shot on goal to keep the clean sheet and win a 4-0 decision.
Sao Paulo, Brazil-native Lucas Almeida led Ashford with a pair of shots.
The result ends the 2012 campaign for the Saints with a 13-4-4 record overall.
Women fall to two seed
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — A dream season that saw the Ashford women's soccer team win a second conference championship in three years, as well as the school's first-ever win in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Women's Soccer National Championship tournament has come to an end.
The 15th-seeded Saints were done in by a pair of goals in the final minute of the opening half in falling to second-seeded Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.), 4-0 on Monday in the round of 16, held at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
Laerke Michaelsen and Mia Persson each scored twice for the Blue Raiders, with both notching a tally in that fateful final minute of the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Josephine Frigge stopped all three shots she faced to earn the shutout.
Playing in her final collegiate game, Calgary, Alberta-native Chelsea Fisher led all Saints players with three shots, one of which required a save. Junior Hollie Babut and freshman Gudrun Eggertsdottir recorded the other AU shots on goal.
Under siege for much of the afternoon, junior Jessica VanDyke finished with four saves on eight shots before giving way to senior Jerika Castillo for the final portion of the game.
The Saints finish the season with a 14-5-2 record. The win total marks the second-most for a season in program history, which was set back in 2010 (16).
