Seniors eagerly awaiting the opening of the Village Cooperative need not wait much longer as the community facility for active adults plans to open its doors in March.
The project that has had multiple delays is on track and homes are filling up fast.
“The project has gone really well,” Shane Wright, project manager of Real Estate Equities Development, said. “We only have nine homes left and we’ve had 12 prospective buyers go through in the last four days.”
After the roof blew off during a severe storm in August, construction was thrown off schedule. Since then, construction has been moving smoothly and workers are finishing up projects on the outside and inside of the building. Prospective buyers will be able to experience the life the facility has to offer firsthand when the model unit is completed this month.
Residents from as far as Missouri and Tennessee and as close as Clinton and surrounding towns will be joining together in the unique community environment. The Village Cooperative of Clinton three-story building will include 44 homes, of which most are filled.
The Clinton facility will house one-, two- and two-plus bedroom, single-level homes that range from 879 to 1,475 square feet.
The $5 million project will offer a maintenance-free and friendly atmosphere for seniors whether they are married or single. Future residents have been meeting at least once a week as a group with Sales Coordinator Tracey Minnick and once a month with Wright. For many, the new friendships go far beyond the group meetings.
“There is a group of single ladies who are attached at the hip,” Wright said. “They seem to do everything together and that’s great. That’s what we are trying to do here, provide a place where people can really feel like they are part of something, not just living in the same building.”
Each home includes a laundry room, storage area and a private balcony or patio. Standard features will include a community room, reading areas, club room, woodworking shop, guest suite, garden plots, underground heated parking with a car wash bay — all in a fully secure building.
Iowa has three running cooperatives, with seven still to be built in Iowa, including Ames, Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Cedar Falls, Sioux City and Clinton. Completed cooperatives in Iowa include Asbury, Mason City and Marshalltown.
Village Cooperative will also offer job opportunities for the area. It plans to employ a residential service coordinator, maintenance technician and housekeeper. Wright and Minnick will continue to host programs with future residents in the few months remaining before the facility is complete and a wide array of activities and gatherings will be offered long after the move-in date.
“It’s one big family of really neat people,” Wright said. “It’s been fun to watch it all come together. This is really one of the unmet needs in the upper Midwest. The community aspect is so important and the comradery. I’ve seen it in each of the communities we have worked with and very much so in Clinton.”
