CLINTON —
The Salvation Army’s kettle fundraiser starts today and Lt. Jeanette Jensen said it is important that the organization receives funding.
“Last year, unfortunately, we did not make our goal,” Jensen said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to serve social services since July. We didn’t make our goal last year. We had no money to help the community. We had to turn people away.”
This year, the Clinton Salvation Army’s goal is $55,000, and Jensen said they are going to do anything in their power to make it.
Jensen said that as of today, bell ringers and the Salvation Army’s counter kettles will be seen everywhere. Most often, bell ringing will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. However, Jensen said if volunteers want to begin ringing early, she will let them.
“We really try to hit our major stores, because people are Thanksgiving shopping right now and this is one of our bigger weeks until we get closer to Christmas,” Jensen said.
This year, 10 unmanned counter kettles will be located in Clinton and Camanche. Jensen is trying to place them in local banks, restaurants and a local bar. Last year, the Salvation Army had three of these kettles.
“Eighty to 90 percent of our yearly budget comes from our Christmas efforts so it’s vital that we at least make our goal this year,” Jensen.
Jensen is asking for volunteers to help with the bell ringing and serve on their advisory board.
“We are finding that we live in a generous community if they are made aware of our needs,” Jensen said.
