CLINTON —
When Carl Anderson, 47, rounded the corner of AC Root on his worn trike, he was speechless. It’s a state that business employees, along his route, said rarely see the friendly Clinton Herald carrier in.
Waiting for Anderson was a new trike, winter gear, food, gift cards and a group of his customers who donated money for the holiday gift.
“Are you surprised?” Julie Bray with AC Root asked.
Anderson, who has been a carrier for the Herald since 1998, responded with a simple, “Yeah,” as he removed his cap and examined the shining blue vessel.
Anderson’s trike, which he has used to deliver papers for the Herald, was already in poor condition when his front tire was vandalized recently. The vandalism left him without the transportation he uses to deliver papers along his route, which runs up Second Street to Lyons.
Employees of the business along Anderson’s route decided to surprise him with a new trike.
“The amazing thing about this person is no matter what is going on around him, he’s always upbeat,” Bray said. “He rides a bike in all kinds of elements and always remains in a positive mood.”
Along with AC Root, employees from Eastman House Furniture, Air Control, Burkert Chiropractic, Ascentra Credit Union, Clover Hills Appliance, Lectronics, Mediacom, Gateway State Bank, Voss Plumbing, Roman Trader and Pawn and Ruhl and Ruhl, donated money.
“He’s a hardworking guy committed to his job,” Louie Burkert said. “The paper’s always there on time.”
Ultimately, the businesses raised $785 for the new trike, Carhart winter gear, food and gift cards. Chad Jensen, with Bicycle Station, also included snow tires and lights for the new trike, which he constructed.
“I’m happy. I’m shocked,” Anderson said before he peddled on to finish his route.
