Eco center plans Christmas fundraiser

CAMANCHE — Holiday trees will create a festive forest inside the Mississippi River Eco Tourism Center for a special new event.

The Friends of Rock Creek have put together a celebration to draw in visitors to the center and raise money for nature gallery displays.

“We are just trying to find ways to get people to come down and experience the new center,” organizer and Clinton County Conservation Board Member Kim Rixen said.

Holiday Tree Jubilee will take place at the new eco center, 3942 291st St., in Camanche, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 6-8 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 9.

Decorated trees, wreaths and baskets will fill the nature gallery for the silent auction. Clinton Conservation Naturalist Jessica Steines will lead natural ornament classes at 6 p.m. Dec. 6-8. Ornaments will be assembled from pine cones, milkweed pods, sycamore and other items from nature. Friends of Rock Creek have several other events in the works, including a deer antler show, local art show and taxidermist show.

Currently Clinton County Conservation needs $200,000 to pay for the new interpretive displays. Educators are developing winter programs and making preparations for the winter season.
