Clinton man faces drug charges

CLINTON — A Clinton man is facing methamphetamine charges after allegedly stealing $54.93 of merchandise from Wal-Mart on March 1.

Brett T. Ashley, 27, 100 N. Third St., is charged with four counts of possession of methamphetamine precursors, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of fifth-degree theft. His preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday.

According to court documents, Clinton police were dispatched to Wal-Mart, 2715 S. 25th St., on March 1 for a shoplifter in custody. Alicia Williams from loss preventions advised the officer that she observed Ashley select and conceal $54.93 worth of merchandise and leave without making any attempt to pay, according to the affidavit.

During a search of Ashley, officers found a small nylon bag containing various items of drug paraphernalia, including syringes, a burnt spoon, razor blades and a small vile containing water, according to the affidavit. Court documents continue to state that Ashley stole Coleman camping fuel, lithium batteries, cold compresses containing ammonium nitrate and Glycerine, which contains 99.5 percent anhydrous. The arresting officer’s experience and training told him these are items used for manufacturing meth, according to the affidavit.

According to court documents. Ashley allegedly admitted that all items he stole were going to be used in manufacturing meth and stated he had been present at a one pot or “shake and bake” meth cook in Clinton as recently as Feb. 27. According to the affidavit, he also allegedly admitted to last using meth on Feb. 28 and described himself as an intravenous drug user of meth, showing the officer the sites of injections on his arms.

Ashley was also arrested on a warrant for failure to appear for theft.
