Fire damages Clinton garage

CLINTON — No injuries were reported in a Thursday afternoon blaze that destroyed a Clinton garage.

According to Clinton Battalion Chief Creighton Regenwether, the Clinton Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 834 14th Ave. South at 4:06 p.m.

When crews arrived they found heavy smoke and fire showing out of the doors and windows of the detached garage, Regenwether said.

The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes.  The rear of the residence and two neighboring garages sustained heat damage in the fire.

The garage and its contents were a total loss with an estimated value of $25,000, according to Regenwether.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an improperly installed wood burner.  The occupant of the residence stated that he was out working in the garage when he placed some wood in his wood burner. He then went back into his residence and noticed smoke coming from the garage.

He tried to extinguish the fire, but the extinguisher was empty. He then called 911.

The Clinton Fire Department responded with a command vehicle, two engines, one ladder truck and three ambulances.  The Clinton Police Department and mutual aid from the Camanche Fire Department were also on the scene.
