Letter to the Editor
As a proud former Lincoln High School graduate may I start by saying I am sad to hear that our school district leaders and school board members would even entertain the idea of closing Lincoln.
Lincoln is the bridge to success for many students and members of this community.
Without it our school district is just setting students up for failure. Believe it or not, not everyone is molded the same. Some students need smaller classrooms, they need a more personal touch and a self paced agenda.
This is a vital asset that Lincoln can provide. Lincoln was a savior for me. I was one of those students that was not molded to attend a large high school. I felt like unless you were involved in multiple school activities or in the “popular crowd” you were just another student.
Lincoln felt like home from day one...the smaller class sizes and individual attention I received from teachers was just what I needed (along with many other students). Teachers and Lincoln staff members were able to really get to know their students and appreciate them for who they were.
During my senior year at Lincoln I experienced a very tragic event in my life and had it not been for Lincoln I do not think I would have graduated on time. Thanks to Lincoln I was able to not only complete my high school courses, but also took college courses my senior year.
Upon graduation I put myself through nursing school and am now a successful Registered Nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. As a member of this community I am asking those with this decision at hand to please keep Lincoln a part of this community.
Do not turn your back on the students that need a slightly different environment than traditional high school. These students will make you proud if given the chance, but they cannot do it without your help. For several years now it seems as though decisions have been made that have poorly affected Lincoln. Now is the time to reflect on what the school district can do to change that pattern and restore Lincoln to what it once was.
Anyone can be successful in this life if given the right fit.
