MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS: Holly Youngquist

CLINTON — The Clinton Public Library has a new employee who will be focusing on bringing more adults in the doors.

Holly Youngquist, 50, of Thomson, Ill., recently started as the Adult Programming and Outreach Librarian at the library. Holly said she is excited about the position and hopes to offer a lot of programming at the library for adults. She feels it is important for libraries to bring culture and education opportunities to adults living in a community. She added programming and outreach allows libraries to be more responsive to the needs of the people.

Holly has alway enjoyed reading. She remembers reading books with her parents when she was young. Holly loves romance novels as well as science fiction and mysteries. Some of her favorite authors are Shirley Damsgaard, Leigh Michaels, Donald Harstad and Christine Feehan. She also loves the J. D. Robb book series by Nora Roberts.

Holly grew up in Fort Dodge and West Branch and worked in her local library in high school. Approximately 20 years ago, she decided to go back to school to pursue a career. She received a bachelors degree in religion in 1997 and a masters in library sciences in 2003. She recently moved from Newton to Thomson, Ill., for the job at the Clinton library.

Holly said she loves working as a librarian. She especially loves working with the people.

“It makes me feel good when their face lights up and I’m able to either put  a fiction book that they’re really going to enjoy in their hands or help them find information that they really need for some reason,” Holly said.

Holly has enjoyed getting to know the staff of the libraries. She spends most of her time at the Lyons branch, but hopes to divide her time between both locations. She is currently working on setting up speakers and creating programming for National Library Week in April. She also plans to have a summer reading program for adults.

In her free time, Holly is involved with the Society for Creative Anachronism. She said she is fascinated by medieval history and enjoys crafts from the time period. Holly also writes and believes in supporting writers.
